History

The station on Zeppelin Mountain in Ny-Ålesund was officially opened in 1990 and is part of the “Ny-Ålesund International Arctic Research and Monitoring Facility”. After 10 years, the original station no longer satisfied modern needs for advanced scientific measurements; thus a new building was erected, featuring improved telecommunication facilities, remotely controlled instruments and more space for new programmes.
On 2 May 2000 HRH Crown Prince Haakon Magnus of Norway re-opened Zeppelin Station, located 474 m a.s.l. The Norwegian Ministry of Environment provided the means to replace the old station building, and Swedish funds have been made available through MISU (Department of Meteorology at Stockholm University) from Knut och Alice Wallenbergstiftelsen.

The swedish atmospheric measurements in Ny-Ålesund started in the late eighties. Now, more than 25 years later Stockholm University is still very active with both atmospheric particle and gas measurements at the Zeppelin station.
