The QS World University Ranking is regarded as one of the most prestigious ranking lists in the world of higher education. This year’s edition includes over 1 500 institutions from 85 different countries. Stockholm University holds place 191, nine places higher than last year (200). Nationally Stockholm University is among the five top universities after Lund University (92), KTH Royal Institute of Technology (98), Uppsala University (116) and Chalmers University of Technology (140).
The best subjects ranked at Stockholm University within the top one hundred are Environmental Studies (30), Social Policy & Administration (31) and Sociology (33), followed by Linguistics (42) and Geography (46). Anthropology, Biological Sciences, Communication & Media Studies, Economics & Econometrics, Education & Training, English Language & Literature, Earth & Marine Sciences, Philosophy and Statistics & Operational Research are placed in the top 100 (51–100).

The QS World University Ranking is published annually by the British firm Quacquarelli Symonds (QS). The ranking is based on six indicators where academic reputation is the most important. The other indicators are reputation among employees, citations per faculty, student-to-academic staff ratio, percentage of international students and percentage of international scientists.
The top three universities in the QS World University Ranking 2020 are Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Stanford University and Harvard University, the same result as last year.
