A globally growing economy and society demand large amounts of chemical compounds. The increasing diversity of newly designed chemicals creates a potential risk for ecosystems. Their effects are difficult to predict due to the complexity of their interactions with biota. To include toxicity assessment early in the process of chemical design is crucial for a resource-efficient development of environmentally friendly chemicals and to reach goals towards a green chemistry and sustainable industry.
In my PhD project I’m aiming for an image-based high-content screening method to assess the toxicity of newly designed chemicals based on the standard test species Daphnia magna. This will be used to get a better understanding of toxic mechanism within an organism.
