The integration of nanocellulose (NC) in packaging applications is a promising approach from a bioeconomy point of view, addressing three major environmental issues: (i) high energy and resource consumption in the pulp and paper industry, (ii) large fossil resource consumption in plastics industry and (iii) global accumulation of non-biodegradable plastic waste. The goal of this project is to create a scientific foundation and develop a new generation of sustainable and safe NC-based products.
This will be done within three different aspects:
• Material production and modification of NC
• Characterization of NC and NC-reinforced composites
• Hazard assessment
A detailed study will be conducted including production, chemical modification and primary characterization of NC. Methods will be developed to understand the environmental, health and safety aspects of NC.
The project is lead by Associate Professor Ulrica Edlund at KTH Polymer Technology. AT ACESx, Professor Magnus Breitholtz is leading the environmental hazard assessment of NC.
