Non-taget screening is to record as much data as possible for a complex sample and let patterns and correlations within the data inform you about which the interesting compounds are. Current developments in analytical instrumentation such as UHPLC couple to high-resolution full scan mass spectrometry enables non-target screening. The driver for this trend is a wish to maximize the likelihood of making a scientifically interesting discovery. Complex samples give rise to complex data. Chemometrical methods are used to bring order and simplicity into this realm of complexity. I will exemplify non-target screening and at the same time demystify some chemometrical methods.
