A research project conducted by Elena Gorokhova at the Department of Environmental Science and Analytical Chemistry (ACES) will develop a framework for quantifying hazardous properties of microplastics and establishing their environmentally acceptable levels.

The funding comes from the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency (Naturvårdsverket) and the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management (Havs- och vattenmyndigheten). The focus on microplastic and their sources, pathways, and consequences is part of the authorities’ efforts to reduce the microplastic pollution. Five research projects at various universities in Sweden share a total of 25 million SEK.

At Stockholm University, Elena Gorokhova, Professor at the Department of Environmental Science and Analytical Chemistry (ACES), is granted 4,999,449 SEK for the project “Towards quantifying impacts of microplastics on environmental and human health.”

The project is a collaboration between the experts in environmental science at ACES, the polymer chemistry within the Research Institutes of Sweden (RISe) and biochemical toxicology at Karolinska Insititute. The project will develop a framework for quantifying hazardous levels of microplastic, and find out which properties of particles and materials should be taken into account. The critical focus of the research is on designing appropriate animal and human tests and providing methodological recommendations on testing hazardous properties of anthropogenic particles.
