Twelve researchers at ACES received a combined 44,3 million SEK (€4,4 million) in external research funding in fiscal year 2017. The Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet) and The Swedish Research Council for Environment, Agricultural Sciences and Spatial Planning (Formas) awarded 12,6- and 18 million SEK (€1,2 million and €1,8 million), respectively, while 29,9 million SEK (€2,9 million) were awarded to a multi-disciplinary research team at Stockholm University by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, of which 13,7 million SEK (€1,4 million) were allocated to ACES.
“We are very pleased that, even in the presence of fierce competition, ACES researchers managed to attract so many contributions from major national research funding bodies. What’s even more exciting is that the recipients came from all five units at ACES and both senior- and junior researchers were among them. This demonstrates the depth and breadth of the research at ACES,”says Magnus Breitholtz, Professor and Head of ACES.
Examples of projects that got selected for funding include the following:
3,2 million SEK (€320000) from the Swedish Research Council for studying the mechanisms for the formation and degradation of dimethylmercury in marine environments.
3 million SEK (€300000) from the Swedish Research Council for studying the partitioning of soot particles from source to destination.
3 million SEK (€300000) from Formas for studying the reproductive ability of Monoporeia affinis as an indicator of the biological effects of contaminants.
3 million SEK (€300000) from Formas for studying the chemical exposure through textiles.
13,7 million SEK (€1,4 million; in collaboration with researchers at the Department of Meteorology, Stockholm University) for studying how large-scale weather events affect climate, how clouds are formed in the Arctic, and also the exact nature of energy exchange between the sea, ice, and the atmosphere.
